Continue readingAloha! We just finished a full week on the island of Kauai and it was magical! Of all the Hawaiian islands, it’s known as the Garden Isle, and it’s plain to see why as you make your approach into the airport at Lihu’e (we heard this pronounced SO many ways during the week we were there, but mostly we heard it as “Leh-hue-ee”).

**Spoiler Alert**—Cape Disappointment was NOT disappointing. In fact, I think we can safely say that it exceeded our expectations and we can’t wait to go back and explore more of the area!
Cape Disappointment State Park is on the southwestern part of the coast in Washington State. There is a $10 day use fee, although if you plan on visiting more Washington State Parks, I’d recommend a Discover Pass, as the annual pass is only $30. It’s pretty simple to get to from Portland, but also makes for a fairly long day-trip. There are campsites and wonderful day-use spaces within the part of the park that we ventured to, but I can imagine it can get a bit chaotic during the summer months.

If you ever venture to Portland (or maybe you live in the area), you must visit Sauvie Island. Let’s be real, most folks only migrate to the island during the fall festive season to pick up their pumpkins and do all things related to Pumpkin Spice Lattes. We are die-hard’s for “The Pumpkin Patch,” and others prefer different farms. BUT did you know the island is SO much bigger than the pumpkin patch farms and there’s an entire wildlife refuge on the northern side? More than that, did you know there is a lighthouse out there?

On the first day of the New Year, we ventured up to Forest Park and hiked around for a couple of hours. We started at the Lower Macleay Trailhead in Northwest Portland (note: parking can be challenging in this area, so mentally prepare yourself for it).
As a way to celebrate some big personal milestones and to get away from the PNW cold/rain for a spell, we went to Cabo for a week and had so much fun exploring a part of Mexico that neither of us had ever been to.
Our first year of monthly hikes is in the books! Now feels like a great time to reflect on all of the beautiful places that we have explored this year…
January:
We started the year in “America’s Premier Urban Forest” (their website says it so it MUST be true), also known as Forest Park. We found ourselves on the Ridge Trail Loop, with a handful of other folks that didn’t mind the somewhat slippery conditions, after quite a rainy couple of weeks.
